Audrey Hepburn

4th May 1929 - 20th Jan 1993

Audrey Hepburn was born as Edda Hepburn-Ruston in Belgium. She possessed an elfin beauty of tremendous charm which was captured in the film 'Roman Holiday', which won her a Best Actress Oscar. One of her most poignant films is 'The Nun's Story', which won her two nominations from the British Academy Award. 

Some of her most memorable movies are 'My Fair Lady' and 'Breakfast at Tiffany's'. In the latter part of her life she worked tirelessly for the charity Unicef.

Burt Lancaster

2nd Nov 1913 - 20th Oct 1994

Burt Lancaster was a natural performer who 'acts' not only with his words and his actions, but also with the way he moves and the way he looks. He started his early career as a circus performer and his talents were put to great effect in 'The Crimson Pirate'. 

Burt's debut film was 'The Killers' and he went on to appear in movies such as 'Elmer Gantry', which won him a Best Actor Oscar. He was further nominated for three Oscars for 'From Here to Eternity', 'Trapeze' and the true-life story 'Birdman of Alcatraz'.

Cary Grant

18th Jan 1904 - 29th Nov 1986

Born Archibald Leach in Bristol, he moved to Hollywood in the early 1930s and became an instant success. He was the most universally appealing romantic lead of his era and was also the favourite actor of Alfred Hitchcock. He starred with many of the leading actresses of the day including Doris Day and Ginger Rogers. 

Some of his most memorable films include: 'Charade', 'Notorious', 'Monkey Business', 'Suspicion', 'Father Goose', 'North by Northwest' and the wonderful black comedy 'Arsenic and Old Lace'.

Doris Day

3rd April 1924 -

Doris Day was one of the best comediennes and most enjoyable singers of the silver screen. She won a Best Actress Oscar Nomination for 'Pillow Talk', starring alongside her frequent co-star Rock Hudson. 

 

She is probably the top woman Box Office Star of all time and was ranked No. 1 for four years in the early 1960s, a record which remains unequalled.

Some of her most memorable movies are 'Calamity Jane', 'Young at Heart', 'The Pajama Game' and Alfred Hitchcock's 'The Man Who Knew Too Much'.

Grace Kelly

12th Nov 1929 - 14th Sept 1982

Grace Kelly was born into a wealthy Philadelphia family. Her screen presence projected a beautiful serene and aloof image. A favourite of Alfred Hitchcock, he starred her in three of his great thrillers, 'Rear Window', 'Dial M for Murder' and 'To Catch a Thief'. He called her a woman of perfect mystery - blonde, subtle - Nordic. 

She won a Best Actress Oscar for the 'The Country Girl'. She retired after her marriage to Prince Rainier of Monaco. Grace Kelly was tragically killed in a car accident in 1982.

Lauren Bacall

16th September 1924 -

Lauren Bacall started her career as a model and was spotted on the cover of a magazine, so began her career in the movies. Her sultry beauty led her to be nicknamed 'The Look', shown to best effect in 'The Big Sleep' and 'The Dark Passage'. Her beautifully alert face, slinky figure and husky voice led to the suggestion that there must have been a panther in her family tree. 

She has appeared with many leading men including Humphrey Bogart and John Wayne and her tremendous charm and beauty still graces our screens today.

Rock Hudson

17th Nov 1925 - 2nd Oct 1985

Rock Hudson was the No. 1 Box Office star in 1957 and remained in the top ten stars until 1965. He was born as Roy Scherer and almost stalled his career in his first movie 'Fighter Squadron'. He starred in the film 'Giant', but was most successful starring alongside Doris Day in light-hearted comedies such as 'Lover Come Back' and the very successful 'Pillow Talk'. 

His undeniable charm and handsome features were perhaps best seen in the movies 'Magnificent Obsession' and 'Written on the Wind'.

Ingrid Bergman

29th Aug 1915 - 29th Aug 1982

Swedish actress most famous for her role in 'Casablanca'. Her well-publicised affair with Italian director Roberto Rossellini, whom she later married, virtually wrecked her acting career.

What set her apart from other film actresses of the period was the extraordinary sense of radiant and natural beauty she possessed. 

She won Oscars as best actress in 'Gaslight' (1947) and 'Anastasia' (1956) and Oscar nominations for 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' (1943), 'The Bells of St Mary's' (1948), 'Joan of Arc' (1949) and 'Murder on the Orient Express' (1970).
