Catherine loved working amongst the sick. Unlike most
other volunteers, she would care for those with the most repellant
diseases, such as leprosy, which was then virtually incurable. Catherine
frequently saw visions of Christ and experienced mystical ecstasy.
She was one of the most down to earth women. Saint's Day -

Cuthbert was one of the greatest saints and missionaries. He preferred
the life of a hermit and secured permission to live as one for eight years
on the island of Lindisfarne.
After his death, his body was transported to Durham, where the
magnificent cathedral now stands.

Catherine was renowned for wealth, birth and education. A man named
Maximin wanted to marry her and convert her to a pagan faith. She refused
him on many occasions. Despite his love for her he was angry and finally
decided to put her to death. A wheel set with razors was designed to cut
her to pieces, but this having failed, she was beheaded by a sword.

Saint George (patron saint of England,
soldiers and knights)
The story of Saint George tells how this Cappadocian knight was riding
through Libya. In the city of Syrene lived a huge, fearsome beast (a
dragon) which terrorised citizens.
George promised to slay the dragon if the people would accept
Christianity.

| The citizens agreed and George killed the
dragon. It is said that later in life Saint George was imprisoned,
tortured and put to death.

Saint Mildred was the daughter of King Merewald and the sister of Saint
Milburga. She was sent by her mother to France to be educated. During this
time she suffered malicious treatment. She escaped by boat, bringing back
to England a number of relics and, in particular, a nail from the cross of
Christ. |

| The stone she stepped on as she landed in Kent
took the impression of her foot and it became a celebrated place of
pilgrimage.

Saint Ursula (patron saint of girls and
schoolgirls)
Saint Ursula was the daughter of a British king. Desiring to escape the
attentions of a pagan prince she, with several virgin companions, traveled
to Cologne on their way to Rome. During their travels, they were besieged
by Huns. Ursula's beauty attracted the prince of Huns but, having declined
his advances, he put her to death with an arrow. |
| Ursula's remains are reputed to dwell in the grand confines
of Cologne cathedral.
